California Holey Rollers

I am thinking about the holey commute I have every day ... that is, a pot holey commute.  The road I roll along to work daily was re-paved a few months ago, but now every day there are a few new holes while the previous day's holes seem to have been patched overnight.  The immediate cause for the new holes seems to be the recent rains, although I do wonder how roads are maintained in places where there is vastly more rain than we get here in California.  The thermal cycling is also considerably less here than much of the US since the roads never freeze.  Maybe this is a jobs program:  If we made roads that didn't spontaneously form holes, we wouldn't need to employ people to fix the roads.

Some birds are more important than others

But are they self-important?  Or does someone else determine that they are important?

Refugee

Just pondering the definition.  Yes, this is nuts in the age of rage where reflecting on anything in a logical manner is a clear sign of mental illness.  But here goes anyway:

"owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it" - UN 1951 Refugee Convention.

Since this definition only permits males to become refugees, it was expanded later to include females with "his or her" verbiage.  Those are now the only two genders permitted among refugees.

One observation is that you must be outside of your country first in order to be a refugee.  Thus, an illegal alien who commits a murder is formally a refugee, but someone born in the US who commits a murder in the US and is caught in the US is clearly not one.

Then there is this religion things.  All of us claim to believe in absolute freedom of religion, but in practice we deny the rights of Druids and Mayans to perform human sacrifice and we are in denial about the Islamic command to "smite infidels".

Another observation is that all refugees are "phobes" - that is, they are fearful of something, since fear is part of the definition.  Thus, I am not sure where they stand now that homophobes, islamophobes and the entire "phobe" movement stands condemned.  Something to point out here is that Nazi war criminals who fled to South America fully meet the definition of refugee.  On the other hand, someone who is by nature fearless can never be a refugee.  Then there are the Christians who are stuck in Mohammedan countries that they were born into.  These suffer by far the greatest persecution in the Middle East, but to travel away from their home area into another country means even more abuse and likely death at the hands of their persecutors, thus, they are excluded from being refugees.

I should leave this topic now.  Admittedly I hadn't given the definition much thought until recently,

Suspicious Package

My wife called me at work and asked me to pick her up from a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station.  Here we go again, I thought.  It turned out to be a "suspicious package" at one of the stations, which caused them to shut down the line heading to our city.  I was about to hyperventilate over the BART system again, but this time they are innocent.  Or at least not guilty of the current turmoil.

Arriving  at the other station, there were cars everywhere and people packing doorways, since it was raining.  My iPhone directed me to my wife's location, since she had moved further away to find a place beyond the crowds and with some relatively clear parking.  Nice to have her safely back here.

Free Speech was first discovered in California!

The article being here.  Which begins with, "BERKELEY - UC Berkeley, the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement, was rocked Wednesday night by a violent demonstration seeking to stop right-wing lightning rod Milo Yiannopoulos from delivering a talk there".  Dr. Wiki has a slightly different opinion.

Leftists will respond that Milo is some sort of fascist hate monger who doesn't deserve freedom of speech for reasons of public safety.  The rebuttal here is that all people who disagree with Leftists are categorized the same way.  My opinion being that Leftists have always bravely supported their own freedom of speech when they are in a rage, which is almost all the time.  When they don't want to hear something, however, there is never any freedom of speech.  Or to put it another way, the only freedom of speech that matters to them is their own.
