Getting ready for the cold swim.

It is that time of year again.  The water temperature drops, but we keep swimming and gradually adjust.  Soon the lake will be colder than the San Francisco Bay.  I may join in on the New Year Alcatraz swim.  Without a wetsuit.  So I am poking around for advice:

Just the thought of you swimming out there sends a chill up my spine! What does your wife think of you doing this?

I think she is worried that I come home safely. We all need to do some sports for our health. Most come with some kind of risk.

I used to go swimming in temperatures which would have had even my mother (no goose pimple either) shivering. Can't remember now why I did (in my teens - on my own - lake, winter). Suppose I marveled at how cold it was one minute, yet, once you jumped that initial hesitation, got immersed, it was so warm. Amateur psychologists do not need to apply.

Good luck, Looney. Enjoy.

I used to love to swim and hated to get out of the water even when the water was cold and I was starting to turn a bit blue. I can't imagine doing it now. Good luck, have fun. And I'm glad I don't have to do it too!

Looney,

For heaven's sake, man: I just got chills all over my body, my feet got cold just by reading about your swimming plan and watching the video (which was a great one, by the way, despite the cold). I sincerely know not how you do it.

But anyway, I am rooting for you for that New Year's Alcatraz swim. What's the prize?

Brrrr...
Cheers

@Ursula, you are reminding me that some people get some sense after their teenage years. Others don't.

@Cheerful Monk, I hear that in your area people cross country ski for miles and then take a dip in some hot springs that are in the middle of nowhere. I wonder how they get dry afterwards without having to deal with a frozen towel.

@Max, you will pleased to know that the premier event in cold water swimming is in South Africa. It is the Speedo Ice Swim.

The prize for completing the New Year's Alcatraz swim is that - *if* you complete the swim - you get to dry off and try to warm up.
