Hey Looney,

Such a gorgeous photo: what is it? (yes, I am highly ignorant when it comes to nature...not much of a fan)

An artist lives within you...

Cheers

It is a conk---a fungus that digests dead or damaged Douglas-fir trees. The usually grow singly and are called artist conks because they stand alone and you can do paintings on the clear face.

Dee Ice Hole, thanks for letting me know what this is. They are quite beautiful in spite of being a fungus.

We took an overnight horseback trip when I was working. On the way down the trail I found a bunch of these and broke them off and put them in my saddle bags. When I got home Inklings painted a scene on each one of them for each person that went on the trip.
