Barbara Boxer: Americans are in danger of not hearing about global warming due to White House conspiracy ...

... proving again what the world knows about Californians - their brains are a bit screwed up. In this particular case, the doctrines of global warming are so all-pervasive that someone who just woke up from a multi-year coma would have difficulty convincing his friends that he hadn't heard about global warming, Government funding of this ideology is everywhere - from NASA on down to the government kindergartens. Sadly this won't stop her from screaming that Dick Cheney is part of a sinister conspiracy to keep Americans from being informed about global warming. Sadly a large number of people will believe her.

You know, it's things like the image in that article that bug the crap out of me. Nuclear power plants don't put out greenhouse emissions. That's harmless steam pouring out of the cooling towers...

Marf, having worked in and on nuclear power plants, I should have noticed that those were cooling towers from a nuke plant, but I didn't pay attention to the picture. Good job!

You always see nuclear plant cooling towers in environmental documentaries on TV or articles. It's more dramatic looking than actual polluters are.

Hi Looney,

Actually in a sense I think that this is fairly old news. There have been regular accusations of your present administration trying to censor scientific reports that were unfavourable in respect of the climate change issue.

Hardly surprising given their "Big Oil" interests. Look at the foot dragging they have been doing in the present G8 round, their track record re Kyoto - it goes on and on.

The reality is that the west , and the US in particular is so addicted to an oil fueled/CO2 heavy lifestyle that even politicians without connections to these industries think twice before making any meaningful commitment to action. Hardly surprising that an administration in bed with the oil industry should be lets say a little "slow".

Its funny how those who deny Human/CO2 driven climate change are often those with the highest CO2 consuming lifestyles.

If I were a cynic I would suggest that in such cases their opinions flow entirely from short term self interest and a lack of charitable interest in how this impacts on the rest of humanity.

While its not universally true, it is my experience that the climate change deniers come largely from the same segment of the self-serving US Christian Right from which springs creationists - renowned for their ability to ignore scientific evidence and wriggle in the face of truths that they find unconfortable.

Bunc, I sort of agree with you. Part of my creationist upbringing is that I become quite cautious when I hear the words "scientists say ...". To paraphrase Clausewitz, about half the time science is politics and/or religion by other means. Then whether or not the science is any good, we bristle at the notion that Big Government is the solution to the problem, rather than the primary cause.

In this instance, oil wells are going to keep pumping oil and coal mines are going to keep producing coal. If America and Europe don't burn the coal & oil, China and India will.

Then there is the issue that Barbara Boxer is a typical paleo-liberal. Any solution she comes up with will target US corporations, rather than foreign ones. The thing we can be certain about: Whatever she proposes will do exactly nothing to cut world-wide green house gas emissions - it will only harm the US economy.

As for changing life styles to cut CO2 emissions, I am all for that. In the US, however, our urban sprawl economy is driven by the NIMBY mentality of wealthy, educated suburbanites, who are just as often Democrats.
