The local high school, Mission San Jose, made #140 in the recent Newsweek ranking of public schools. The methodology is rather simplistic: They take the number of AP tests taken by seniors and divide by the number of graduating seniors. The nearby Palo Alto school district decided to pull out of the rankings. It looks like this kind of ranking would be easy to fudge. A little curriculum change would allow more AP classes to be pushed into the senior year. At MSJ, this wouldn't work due to the high stress on the kids and the emphasis on getting high AP test scores.
